Google Map Saver

Announcement!

Both GMS and GMS.NET confirmed to work on Windows 10 Release.

As many of you noticed since Google changed their maps GMS experienced problems.

If you have problems with GMS please try GMS.NET from www.codres.de/gms-net-download.

Please let me know by writing a comment if GMS.NET works better for you.

TIP: To get rid of the bogus icons on top of the map, simply click the content of the map, once, before saving. Please Note that GMS.NET requires Microsoft.NET v3.5+

What’s new?

144 MPixel Map from OpenStreetMap created with GMS.NET View it here

It seems that TIFF format is more optimized for huge map sizes so please save as TIFF for big resolution.

Google Map Saver (GMS) offers you an easy way to download big Google Maps on your PC as JPEG, PNG-8, PNG-24, BMP or Targa files. GMS is light (only ~400 KBytes) and very easy to run since doesn’t have an installer. Just download it on your Desktop and Run-It!

GMS runs on Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows Vista and Windows 7.

GMS is 100% free, no spyware!

GMS is not Crippleware. The superimposed watermark  can be removed, easily, with three clicks. It is there only that you visit the About Box 😉

By Downloading and running GMS you agree with the license and with the “Fair Use” terms listed bellow.

Fair Use

I was trying to be fair, in relation with you, the user, by giving this application for free, so please try the same and please follow my recomandations:

  • Do not use maps created with GMS for commercial purpose.
  • Do not use the downloaded maps in conjunctions with navigation hardware.
  • Even if it is possible to retrieve greather than 4000×4000 pixels maps, I don’t recommend you to do that.
  • Do not try to automate GMS with automation tools (e.g. AutoHotKey). You will break the Google’s Terms of Use (bulk download).
  • Do not remove the Google overlays and copyright notes.

Q&A

  • Q: Can I run it on Linux or Mac?
A: I think you can by using WineHQ.
  • Q: I think your tool breaks the Google’s Terms of Use
A: I was thinking about this before I made the application public. What I can tell you, is that I’m not using any tricks (e.g. direct and bulk downloads) to get the maps. I’m simply using the a standard Google URL via IFRAME. Google allows us to see bigger maps. I found is possible, I did it. In GMS one user request = one Google Maps access. No bulk download.
  • Q: There are other ways to save Google maps?
A: Yes! They are. Some are commercial OR there are some free Firefox hacks. I’m not competing theese solutions. I just wanted something simple AND free.
  • Q: How can I contribute?
A: Make some comments, give some suggestions, spread the word, digg it or…
  • Q: Will you keep this tool free?
    A:  Yes

GMS is Beta! If you find any bugs or you have any ideas please comment.

User’s Tips

Tip: To save huge maps (e.g. if you get Out Of Memory error), Save the map as BMP. To convert the BMP to other formats (e.g. JPG or PNG) use the free Paint.NET software.
If you get a yellow box saying Loading… e.g. on WinXP Home SP3 Here’s a hint from GMS user Simple Simon’s Snail who found a workaround (Thanks Simon!)
Tip from MuhammadA lot of people has been asking about loading Google My Place into this map. I’ve found the solution. You’ll need Fireshot extension/addon for Firefox/Chrome.

1. First, find out the address of your Google My Place, should look like this:http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?hl=en&dg=feature&ie=UTF8&oe=UTF8&msa=0&msid=213353022109462492729.0004ef95b833ce8288e9f
2. Just enter any location in the “Location/POI” and the resolution you wanted. As for “Zoom” and “Map Type” you can adjust later.
3. Once the image appear, right-click on the small white gap between the map image and the blue bar, select view source.
4. Once the Notepad appear, replace the address starting with http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&q=(your search Location/POI) with your Google My Places address.
5. Save As your Notepad and select “All Files”, Your filename should end with .htm
6. Open your .htm file with your web browser.
7. Adjust your “Zoom” and “Map Type” to your likening.
8. Once you have decide the final view of your map, from the dropdown menu of your Fireshot extension/addon select “Capture entire page and…”, “Save” , select format you want.
9. Done.

  6. In the next version would be interesting to be able to select the area instead of just existing geographic coordinates of the feature.

  7. can i download a reolution pic of 18000 * 18000…this stucks the software..any comments…

  8. Hi deCoder, great program !!

But i am looking for a program that can show GPS tracks on google maps in a large (!!) scale. All programs i know so far can only show tracks within the max windows size of the monitor. Even my favorite geosetter (www.geosetter.de) can not cross that border. That sucks.

Can you please add an option to to open *.gpx files and display the tracks on the map ?

Greetings from Bremen to Karlsruhe !

  9. hey there and thank you to your information ? I have certainly picked up something new from proper here. I did then again experience a few technical issues the usage of this website, since I experienced to reload the web site many occasions prior to I may just get it to load correctly. I have been wondering in case your web hosting is OK? No longer that I’m complaining, however sluggish loading instances occasions will sometimes impact your placement in google and can harm your high-quality ranking if ads and marketing with Adwords. Well I’m adding this RSS to my e-mail and could look out for a lot more of your respective interesting content. Make sure you update this again soon..

  10. Need an option to rotate the view (look north/south/east/west) as in Google Maps.

  11. Hello there, I found your site via Google whilst searching for a similar matter, your website came up, it looks good. I have bookmarked it in my google bookmarks.

  12. It’s actually a nice and useful piece of information. I am glad that you shared this useful information with us. Please keep us up to date like this. Thank you for sharing.

  13. Hi and thanks for this helpful tool
I wish to make suggestion for future adds maybe,
the tool may hangup or retrieve blank parts on some connections …. so if their is any resume support for the map you wish to capture, that will be a great help

any workaround for this problem will be appreciated too!

    and thanks again

  14. great job! I’m impressed.
What about (next step?) to syncro downloaded maps for mobile devices? Should be the same files but saved in different location, isn’t it?
By the way, again, great job I remember my last downloaded map saver was very ugly and didn’t work so nice….
    Ciao
    Luigi

  15. I follow every single step of the manual, still the only thing I end up with is a jpg image, like a screenshot, thus immovable = unusable.

If I compare with the video at

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=onCPwi4Sdco ,

my result begins to differ from around 1.00. Fx, I don’t get an arrowed cross as a pointer.

GMS is about an offline map, from the moment it has been downloaded and saved, right?

So where do I and my XP Pro go wrong ???

  16. Great app, just what I need 🙂
One suggestion…………………..can you add the option to choose a corner of the map as the co-ordinate point please? This will make it easier when trying to get maps overlapped when creating an even bigger one.
    Yours Roy

  17. similar to print screen / screenshot …. vogus ,,,

  18. Was just wondering how to remove infos on the map, that it’s only a satelite map with nothing about the destination

  19. Hello! Your program work correctly but don’t let to choose a maps from my places, why don’t you insert this option?

    Bye

    Scenfaroc

  20. Hi!
thanky for this great tool! Is it possible to remove the centered pin (e.g. karlsruhe) before saving the map?

    thanks!

  21. @kurt: Unfortunately it is not possible to remove the Pin. You can hide the bubble box but not the pin

  22. It is help ful. Another thing will make it far better if you give a provision to choose a place by co-ordinate, say latitude and longitude. Because many small areas name are yet not included in google map but they can be easily picked by co-ordinate.

  23. I love what I’m seeing so far. I have created a “My-places” Google map and would like to print it out in large “plotter” format. Can I import that map into this program which would include the markers I have already created?

    Thanks

  24. Wer und wo zu arrangieren in diesem Sommer zu fairen, freien Weitergabe von Informationen .

  25. SVG format files are used very often recently, i hope this software can save files in SVG format.

  26. SVG format files are used very often recently, i hope this software can save files in SVG format. hope to receive your updating.

  27. How can i download the google mape saver

  28. It would help alot if your app could accept google map url. In my case i have created custom map using google fusion tables with all placemarks and published it so that it is publically available. Being able to save it to an image would be great. Also bigger resolution options or ability to enter your own would be also helpful. The out of memory issue could be soled by saving parts of images to different files, at least for me it’s ok, i’ll find a way how to glue them together.

  29. I want to change the image that GMS saves for another more older or recent. How can i do this?

    thanks

    Carolina
